A house of international meetings

Two students are sitting in front of a computer in the upper floor of the Erich Brost Institute, highly concentrated. They search for background information on the Polish media system – their working language is a mixture of German and English since one of the students is a Polish exchange student. In the meantime in the big conference room in the basement a LCD projector has been switched on. A correspondent is going to lecture about the US election campaign. Only a few weeks before, a Chinese visiting scholar from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences held a presentation on journalism in China in the very same room. An academic staff member is busy filing the latest research report into the in-house library. Situated on the North Campus of Dortmund’s Technical University, the Erich Brost Institute is a venue for journalism researchers and media practicioners – and a place where students, professors, research fellows and journalists from all over the world can meet.

Training of junior journalists in Europe

The premises were built in 2001/2002, while the Erich Brost Institute for Journalism in Europe had already been founded in 1991 by Erich Brost, the late editor and publisher of the paper „Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung“ (WAZ), one of Germany’s largest newspapers. Erich Brost founded the institute as a nonprofit corporation paid from his private means. The founder’s idea was to develop a pan-european network of journalism schools, in order to promote the exchange of students and associate professors, to develop new ways of teaching and studying, and to promote research projects on journalism in Europe.

Workspace for international groups

Seminarraum im EBH

The building’s design perfectly copes with the needs of multinational work groups: they will find numerous communication set-ups, a highly flexible room use, and variable technical equipment. The building gives space for more than two dozen offices, workshops and class rooms. The big conference room in the basement seats more than 120 people and comes with an own interpreter gallery – a supremely suitable possibility for multinational groups to work together. Alongside, the institute also offers apartments for visiting researchers. The vestibule can be used for receptions and smaller exhibits while an outdoor stage in the inner courtyard offers space for various cultural events. Upon request the Erich-Brost-Institute can be rented out for external events. For further information contact the facility manager Mr. Olaf Bartholomé (Tel. 0049-231/755-6957).
